National Instruments PXIe-5171 High-Density Oscilloscope
The National Instruments PXIe-5171 (Part Number: 783692-01) High-Density Oscilloscope, with the Kintex-7 FPGA, controls the timing in the analog data acquisition channels. The NI PXIe-5171 Oscilloscope also manages DRAM access, communicates through the PXIe bus, handles the acquisition trigger, and performs any signal processing required. This level of programmability and adaptability allows National Instruments and its clients to improve, expand, or enhance instrument performance when necessary. The device is equipped with 8 simultaneously sampled, single-ended voltage input channels with a -3 dB bandwidth of 250 MHz, and a maximum real-time sample rate of 250 MS/s.
The PXIe-5171 supports various software options, including the NI-SCOPE driver software, LabVIEW, C/C++/C#, NI-SCOPE Soft Front Panel (SFP), and instrument driver libraries such as the LabVIEW FPGA Module. The device hardware can be configured using Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX). Unlike conventional stand-alone instruments that require periodic hardware upgrades, the use of an FPGA to control oscilloscope operations enables reconfiguration with LabVIEW and LabVIEW FPGA software in minutes to days, depending on complexity.
The NI PXIe-5171 Oscilloscope has an ADC with signal conditioning, forming the basis of a digitizer. Some digitizers, when combined with appropriate software, can be sold as oscilloscopes. However, while the distinction is evolving, digitizers are often modular, while oscilloscopes are typically standalone benchtop instruments. This differentiation is usually tied to application use cases—oscilloscopes are primarily used for debugging, whereas digitizers are focused on data acquisition. The device features 8 SMA input connectors and an AUX I/O (MHDMR) connector for additional functionality, including external clocking, triggering, and PFI lines.
Both oscilloscopes and digitizers include various trigger modes that allow selective signal event capture or synchronization with an external trigger. Additionally, high-speed modules, such as the PXIe-5171, incorporate deep memory to facilitate efficient local data transfer. The PXIe-5171 weighs 17.1 oz. and measures 7.3 × 0.8 × 5.1 inches. The recommended operating temperature range is 0 °C to 45 °C.
