National Instruments TNT500X GPIB ASIC Interface
The TNT500X (TNT5002-AQF24) is a compact, single-chip GPIB interface ASIC that integrates the capabilities of an NI-488.2-compatible 4882 register core with a PCI-capable interface and on-chip GPIB transceivers to enable direct porting of existing TNT4882/NAT9914 software and seamless integration into PCI-based instrumentation. The chip is available in two different modes: a PCI4882 mode (native PCI bus-master mode) and a GEN4882 mode (generic I/O interface) to allow for the use of this chip in both embedded GPIB cards and in instrument front-end designs requiring PCI or parallel bus interfaces.
The TNT500X has been designed to operate in today's mixed voltage environment. This chip operates at 3.3V but is able to support both 3.3V and 5V signaling on its PCI/generic I/O pins. It contains integrated three-state IEEE-488.1 transceivers and also implements the IEEE-488.1 functions along with the High Speed Extensions to these functions (HS488). These extensions permit high-speed data transfer via the HS488 method and will also allow the chip to coexist with non-HS488 instruments on the same GPIB bus.
For high-throughput applications, the chip provides a DMA path that contains a 64-byte PCI DMA FIFO and a 32-byte GPIB FIFO (total of 96 bytes when DMA is used) to achieve high throughput. In addition to providing the DMA path, the chip can also provide high-throughput data transfer via the HS488 method (multi MB/sec).
The TNT500X shipset consists of the ASIC in a 144-pin PQFP package with all mechanical and pinout documentation for both PCI4882 and GEN4882 modes along with a serial ROM interface to load PCI device ID and serial numbers as required. In addition to the standard GPIB signals (DIO#, ATN#, DAV#, NRFD#, NDAC#, EOI#, IFC#, SRQ#, REN#), the pin description covers all PCI signals, generic bus lines, clock options (PCICLK or external 40 MHz), and indicator outputs for REM, talk/listen status and triggers—allowing designers to easily lay out their board level design.
PCI-based cards and modular test racks and OEM PCI cards will benefit from the TNT500X if they have an engineer who wants a drop-in, register-compatible GPIB interface that requires minimal firmware modifications, supports DMA-accelerated streaming, and can fit within the high-density footprint of a QFP package.
