Used-Line can place your automatic listings on the site either by spidering (scanning) your existing site, or by uploading a spreadsheet.
- To set up the spider, simply email the url of your website or online store to your sales rep or to firstname.lastname@example.org
- To set up your spreadsheet, view Spreadsheet Instructions in My UL.
Your Ad Titles
The Used-Line search engine searches the titles of ads, not the description. It is essential that your ad titles are designed in a way that they will be found by searchers. Ask yourself what a buyer might put into the search box when looking for your item, and make sure that your title reflects that. For example; some users will look for Keysight 8596E and some for Agilent 8596E. So include both Keysight and Agilent in your title. And perhaps even HP!
Another example of a common flaw in titles is not including enough spaces. Leave a space where you think that the buyer will. If your ad says HP 8596E/001/002/003, then it won't be found unless the buyer uses a * wildcard. A space after the 8596E will do a lot of good. The length of the title is 70 characters and sometimes it is a squeeze to include what you need, but don't squeeze out spaces where you need them.
Changing Your Ad Titles
If you post your ads manually with Used-Line manual ads, then you have complete control over what is included in the title, and can edit the individual ad.
Spreadsheets: The system will use the first few words of the description to create the title of the ad. If you want to change this without changing the description on the spreadsheet, you can add an extra column with the heading "Title" and the system will use that.
Scanned by the Robot: For listings that are scanned by the Robot, the change would have to be made on the source.
Note that if your ads are uploaded automatically, you can use the Featured Items Add-On to convert some of you ads to manual ads, giving you free reign on the editing, and letting you post up to 5 images of your product.
Equipment Categories and Ad Titles
We have a sophisticated system that detects keywords in the ad and chooses the category automatically. Your chances for correct categorization increase when you have descriptive titles. Correct categorization is a major plus as it’s a way for people to find your product without knowing the model or manufacturer. If you think that your equipment is in the wrong category, then simply contact us and we will adjust it on our end.
Including Photos in Your Listing
For manual ads, you can add up to 5 photos with a maximum size of 6 MB each. In My UL, select Place New Ads Upload Images section at the bottom of the form.
If your ads are uploaded in bulk, you can include 1 photo per ad.
Depending on which upload method you use, your images will be handled as follows:
- When our robot scans your listings automatically, it will use the first photo for your product.
- If you purchase the Featured Items Add-On you can treat some of you ads manually, and use full editing capabilities to add up to 5 photos per Featured Item. Please note that the maximum size for images is 6 MB.
- If you are using a spreadsheet, insert the image path (url) in the column that says "picture." To obtain the image path (url), go to the listing on your actual website or any website where the product is hosted with a picture. Right-click on the picture and select "Copy Image URL" if in Chrome, or the equivalent in other browsers. Then insert this url into the spreadsheet. For more information on spreadsheets, view "Spreadsheet Instructions" in My UL.
Listing Featured Items
You can purchase Featured Items by speaking with your Used-Line rep.
Featured Items are listings that appear at the top of the search results for that product. They can be edited manually, and can include up to 5 images per listing, each one no larger than 6 MB. These listings will occasionally appear above the search results in their own box when the overall category is searched.
There are two ways to feature an ad. One way is to upload the listing manually. You can do this by logging in to My UL, then selecting Place New Ads. From there, simply fill in the information and click Save.
The other way to feature an ad is to move it from your automatic ads into your Manual Ads (Featured Items). You can do this by selecting My Ads, then My Auto Ads. From here, simply choose the listing that you want to feature, and click Feature This Ad.
Including Prices as Opposed to "Call"
A common question that is asked is whether it is optimal to include a price or not. If you do not include a price, the listing will simply say "Call" in the price column. Our observation on this topic is that when you list a specific price, it pre-qualifies the lead and filters out bottom feeders. This is recommended if dealers want to minimize calls and only hear from serious shoppers. However, some dealers prefer to get more calls, and if no price is listed, it can encourage calls.
What does it do?
The Used-Line Robot is the system that automatically visits dealer websites and obtains inventory information. This system gets dealer inventories listed with absolutely no effort from the dealer. The robot then determines the correct equipment category and inserts the listings into the database.
How often does the Robot scan?
The scanning frequency can be once a day up to once every three days, depending on your preference.
Getting Your Listings Perfect - Download Tables (Data Feeds)
If you want to maximize your listings via the Robot, you can create a data feed for our robot in XML or HTML.
Click HERE for detailed instructions on how to structure your data feed. You can download an Excel template from this page.
Adding the In-Stock Icon to Your Listings
You can purchase the In-Stock Icon by speaking with your Used-Line rep.
We offer a paid feature that places a green In Stock label in applicable listings. This is a great way to draw attention to your listings and encourage customers that are looking for an immediate purchase. If you only want certain listings to be labelled "In Stock," then you must indicate these listings.
If you are using Featured Items, then you can simply check the box that says "In-Stock." If you are emailing us a spreadsheet, then place a "1" or the words "In Stock" underneath the column titled "In Stock" on your spreadsheet. If our robot is scanning the listings, then let us know how we should instruct it to determine which listings are in stock. Having the words "in stock" on the listing on your homepage is one option.
