Traditionally, the acid or base eluents are prepared off-line by dilution from reagent-grade chemicals. This process can be tedious,
prone to operator errors, and often introduces contaminants. The preparation of carbonate-free NaOH or KOH eluents, which are
widely used as eluents in the ion chromatographic separation of anions, is difficult because carbonate can be introduced as an
impurity from the source chemical, from the reagent water, or by adsorption of carbon dioxide from air. The presence of carbonate
in NaOH or KOH eluents can compromise the performance of an ion chromatographic method by causing undesirable
chromatographic baseline drift during the hydroxide gradient and even irreproducible retention times for analytes. The use of the
EG50 Eluent Generator System eliminates these problems.
Another advantage of the EG50 is the convenience of eluent generator control. Gradient separations can be performed using
electrical current to generate gradients with minimal delay. In addition, the use of the EG50 can reduce the maintenance costs of
the pumping system since the pump need only pump deionized water instead of the more corrosive acid or base eluent.
The EG50 also contains a power supply controller for operation of a Continuously Regenerated Trap Column (CR-TC). The CRTC
removes any extraneous contaminants from the DI water source. The Continuously Regenerated Trap Column is
electrolytically regenerated, thus eliminating the need for online chemical regeneration. A CR-ATC Trap Column is used for
anion exchange applications while a CR-CTC Trap Column is used for cation exchange applications. (Source: Eluent Generator Product Manual)
This Dionex EG50 eluent generator was acquired from a working Dionex series 50 HPLC system. The EG50 is in great cosmetic condition and includes the following used components: (1) CR-TC Continuously regenerated trap column, (1) GM-3 gradient mixer, (1) eluent generation chamber, and (1) degassing unit. New Life Scientific technicians performed a visual inspection of the module and noted that the former KOH eluent had damaged the diagram on the inner panel; the cosmetic damage has not hindered the basic functionality of the instrument and should be considered superficial. NLS technicians were unable to test this equipment, but confirmed that it passed the inspection and this product will be sold as a fully-functional module. For more details about the EG50, please see the photos, product links, and contact New Life Scientific about the thirty-day warranty provided on this Dionex eluent generator.
